It was grade nine, in the library of my mediocre high school that I first saw the album cover for the Eagles Greatest Hits.

Over the past 35 years, the US Southwest is a place I have probably returned to the most, largely inspired by that Album Cover. Maybe that is the best gift high school gave me!!!

Inspiring geography by any measure; be it almost anywhere in Utah or the Arizona Strip area

The stretch of highway 163, going east to west is iconic. Period. And surely one of the great stretches of road anywhere on the planet.

Forrest Gump Hill, Highway 163

I have done this stretch of road several times both by car and also the first time; on a bicycle.

A lesser known but equally stunning drive exists a few miles before this viewpoint. The Valley of the Gods Rd.

Its a dirt road easily done in any car in good weather and gets you much closer to several of the formations.

In my previous trips to this particular part of the area, we had skipped this drive. So it was something new and it is something you should not skip!

Moab to Page is a reasonably long drive and not made faster by the scenery…

Page Arizona

Page was both a natural stop and also a place to try the Page Rim Trail; a MTB trail that circles the Mesa upon which Page is located.

Turns out, its a great 10 mile ride. Some great scenery and a really fun, fast track!

After that, some barbecue! Something we had noticed the night before….
